The City of Birmingham was named after Birmingham/ England.

1818 - The story of Birmingham began when four enterprising man - Elijah Willits, Benjamin Pierce, John Haminlton and John West Hunter purchased the first parcels totaling 640 acres of land.                            1819 - John West Hunter was the first permanent resident building his log cabin during the winter of 1819. 1864 - The quiet village of Birmingham emerged and officialy incorporated in 1864. The first village election was held at the house of James Grinley, on Tuesday, March 1, 1864.                                                       1933 - The efforts of the first trustees and the growing community eventualy led to the incorporation of the city of Birmingham. Harry Allen was named first mayor of the city.                                                         1950 - Friends of the Baldwin Library - non profit association supporting & enhancing the goals of the Library.

Birmingham is an established, upscale community with tree-lined streets, a wide variety of homes style & sizes Covers 4.73 square miles and was named one of the country's " Top 20 walkable communities"  The number of historic homes and buildings reflect the historic character of the city. Birmingham residents asteem culture and art. The city of Birmingham is vibrant community with a population of almost 20,000. The community is able to maintain the feel of a small town, while experiencing the benefits of an affluent urban area. This year, Birmingham celebrates the 70th anniversary of it's incorporation as a home rule city.
